A central message in Mamdani’s announcement focused on the city’s immigrant population, stating, “We can all stand up to ICE if you know your rights.” He noted that individuals in the United States may choose not to speak to immigration agents, may record interactions without interfering, and may refuse entry to private areas unless presented with a judicial warrant signed by a judge.
The video explains that “ICE is legally allowed to lie to you, but you have the right to remain silent.” Mamdani also advised that anyone being detained may ask, “Am I free to go?” until the agent provides an answer. Mamdani will be sworn in as mayor on January 1.
Demonstrators gathered the previous week as ICE attempted to detain individuals near Chinatown. A similar operation occurred last October in the same neighborhood and drew protests as well.
Another statement in the video reaffirmed the city’s stance on immigration, with Mamdani saying, “New York will always welcome immigrants, and I will fight each and every day to protect, support, and celebrate our immigrant brothers and sisters.” The video follows his earlier Oval Office meeting with President Donald Trump, whose administration is conducting federal immigration operations across multiple U.S. cities, including New Orleans.
