‎Brown University reversed an earlier statement that indicated a suspect was in custody, confirming instead that no arrests had been made and that police were actively searching for the individual or individuals involved in the shooting.
‎Providence Police said multiple people were shot in the area near campus and described the investigation as active, urging the public to shelter in place or avoid the area until further notice as officers secured the scene.
‎University officials reported that a shelter-in-place alert was issued at 4:22 p.m. ET after shots were reported near the Barus & Holley Engineering building. Law enforcement agencies and emergency medical personnel were deployed across campus as the response continued.
‎Officials confirmed that multiple victims were transported to local hospitals, though details about their conditions were not immediately available. Senior university leaders said they were coordinating with law enforcement and medical teams to account for individuals in affected buildings during scheduled exams and to provide support services to students, staff, and families.
‎President Donald Trump said he had been briefed on the shooting at Brown University, noting that the FBI was on scene and acknowledging the victims and their families during remarks shared publicly.
‎Rhode Island’s governor said the state was closely monitoring the situation, with state police and emergency management assisting local authorities, and urged residents to avoid the area and rely on official updates.
‎Campus alerts repeatedly instructed community members to continue sheltering in place, avoid the Governor Street and Barus & Holley areas, and remain alert as police searched for the suspect.
‎Brown University shared guidance consistent with emergency response protocols, advising those on campus to lock doors, silence phones, and remain hidden if evacuation was not possible until further safety information was provided.
‎A parent of a Brown University student told LiveNOW from FOX that her son was safe in a barricaded room after hearing gunshots while studying in the library. She said students ran from the area and remained sheltered as updates continued.
‎City officials said information was still being gathered from the active scene as the investigation progressed.
‎Brown University is a private Ivy League institution with about 7,300 undergraduate students and more than 3,000 graduate students. The incident occurred on the second day of final exams for the fall semester.
