How Jeffrey Epstein Built a Network Around Bill Gates and Microsoft Executives
Silicon Valley was caught off guard in November 2012 when Steve Sinofsky abruptly left Microsoft. A longtime protégé of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, Sinofsky had joined the company straight out of graduate school and eventually rose to lead the Windows division.
As president of Windows, he oversaw the operating system that powered more than 90% of computers globally. Many inside the technology industry believed he was the likely successor to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.

The sudden announcement rattled investors. Microsoft’s share price fell almost 3% the following day, erasing billions from the company’s market value.
Months later, when Sinofsky’s resignation agreement appeared in filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, analysts carefully studied the document. A clause preventing either side from speaking negatively about the other drew attention.
Some observers said the language made it look as though the executive had effectively been required to stay silent.
Emails Show Epstein’s Early Involvement
According to recently released Department of Justice records related to Jeffrey Epstein, that impression was not accidental.
The files show that on April 6, 2013—three months before the resignation agreement became public—Epstein sent Sinofsky a copy of the document and asked for feedback.
In one exchange about the non-disparagement clause, Epstein wrote that the SEC disclosure could make it appear Microsoft feared what Sinofsky might say and was “buying your silence.”
Sinofsky replied: “I agree. Thank you.”
At the time, Epstein had already pleaded guilty to soliciting and procuring a minor for prostitution and was registered as a sex offender. Despite that history, the documents show he had been discussing the executive’s departure with Sinofsky for months.
In an April 3, 2013 email, Epstein proposed charging $1 million to oversee negotiations related to the exit package.
“I will play any role you choose, except for the villain,” he wrote, suggesting he could take control of the process and shield Sinofsky from the surrounding speculation.
Negotiating a Multimillion-Dollar Exit
Epstein ultimately acted as the main negotiator for Sinofsky, working alongside the executive’s lawyer Jay Lefkowitz. Correspondence in the DOJ files shows that Lefkowitz and another attorney, Scott Price of Kirkland & Ellis, copied Epstein on messages discussing the terms and language of the agreement.
None of the individuals involved have been charged with wrongdoing.
Sinofsky eventually finalized a $14 million departure deal with Microsoft. In September 2013, emails confirmed that a wire transfer had been completed.
The following morning, Epstein’s accountant confirmed receipt of $1 million.
Sinofsky declined requests for comment regarding the episode. He is currently listed as a board partner at venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, while Microsoft also declined to comment.
Epstein’s Route Into Bill Gates’ Orbit
The story of Epstein negotiating a seven-figure agreement for Microsoft’s second-most senior executive highlights how he gained access to the inner circle surrounding Bill Gates.
Justice Department documents indicate that when Epstein could not reach Gates directly, he relied on intermediaries.
Sinofsky was only one of several individuals who served as indirect channels. The tactic mirrored approaches Epstein reportedly used with other prominent figures, including Elon Musk.
Through conversations with Sinofsky, Epstein gathered information about Gates’ business decisions, his thinking, and the personalities within his professional world.
Other sources provided additional insight or leverage, including neurosurgeon Melanie Walker, Gates Foundation science adviser Boris Nikolic, and Russian bridge player Mila Antonova.
Gathering Information Through Gates’ Associates
Melanie Walker, Sinofsky’s longtime partner, had known Epstein since the early 1990s. She first met him at the Plaza Hotel after being introduced by Donald Trump, according to an email included in the DOJ records.
Over time she built an impressive career, serving in positions at the Gates Foundation, the World Health Organization, and the World Bank while remaining in contact with Epstein.
In numerous messages she shared details about her professional life and interactions with Gates.
In a July 2011 email, Walker relayed information about leadership tensions inside Microsoft. She wrote that Gates had considered returning to run the company himself and believed Sinofsky was “too mean to be a CEO.”
She asked Epstein not to spread the information.
Walker has not been charged with wrongdoing and declined to comment through her lawyers.
A Relationship That Became Strained
Later communications show Walker continuing to brief Epstein on developments within Gates’ world.
During a 2017 message exchange, she told Epstein about meetings Gates had scheduled in Washington and said the billionaire wished he could communicate more directly but needed to do so through trusted intermediaries because he was being closely watched.
Walker also said Gates wanted to speak with Epstein but that Melinda Gates opposed any renewed contact.
A spokesperson for Melinda French Gates later said she had met Epstein only once and made it clear she wanted nothing further to do with him.
As Walker’s own role at the Gates Foundation began to unravel in 2017, she turned to Epstein for advice on how to handle the situation.
Another Crisis: Boris Nikolic’s Departure
Around the same period, another key Gates associate was also leaving the billionaire’s organizations.
Boris Nikolic had served as Gates’ chief science adviser, working across both the Gates Foundation and the private investment office known as bgC3. Emails released by the DOJ show that Nikolic had been in contact with Epstein since at least 2009.
Nikolic arranged meetings between Gates and Epstein, including one in February 2013 and another in Paris later that year.
Soon afterward, however, Gates ended their professional relationship.
The precise cause remains unclear. In later messages to Epstein, Nikolic speculated about a series of events involving a Russian bridge player named Mila Antonova and the possibility that Melinda Gates had discovered the relationship.
Epstein Steps In as Negotiator Again
As tensions escalated, Nikolic also turned to Epstein for help negotiating his departure.
Gates acknowledged Epstein’s role in an email authorizing Gates Ventures CEO Larry Cohen to discuss the matter with him.
From that point forward, Epstein represented Nikolic in discussions that eventually produced an exit package including a $5 million advance and financial backing for a venture capital fund.
The money became the seed funding for Biomatics Capital, which Gates continued to support.
Mila Antonova and a New Form of Leverage
While negotiating Nikolic’s separation, Epstein also developed a connection with Mila Antonova.
Antonova, a Russian bridge player, had met Gates at a bridge tournament in 2009 and maintained a relationship with him for a time, according to her attorney.
DOJ documents show Epstein paid for some of Antonova’s coding classes and allowed her to stay in apartments he owned on New York’s Upper East Side.
Her attorney later said she accepted the support believing Epstein wanted to help her and had no knowledge of any attempt to pressure Gates.
Emails suggest Epstein sometimes referenced his support for Antonova when communicating with Gates’ associates.
The Philanthropy Idea Behind the Relationship
The business concept that initially linked Epstein and Gates was a proposed donor-advised fund.
Epstein promoted the idea beginning in 2011, envisioning a philanthropic vehicle that would manage the wealth of newly minted billionaires. He believed donors involved could benefit from reduced taxes through the structure.
For a period, Gates showed interest in the proposal and even considered discussing it at a dinner expected to include investors Ray Dalio and Paul Tudor Jones.
Eventually the project stalled, and Gates gradually stopped communicating directly with Epstein.
Escalation Before Epstein’s Arrest
As years passed, Epstein’s messages reportedly shifted from business proposals to pressure.
By 2019 he was sending emails requesting reimbursement for expenses he claimed to have covered and referencing earlier meetings between the two men.
Not long afterward, federal authorities arrested Epstein on charges of sex trafficking of minors and conspiracy to commit sex trafficking.
He died in a Manhattan jail cell a month later.
Ongoing Scrutiny
Although Gates has not been accused of wrongdoing, his past meetings with Epstein continue to draw attention.
He has been called to testify before a House committee examining the relationship.
A spokesperson for Gates said he regrets meeting Epstein and emphasized that he never witnessed or participated in any illegal conduct.
